Acute suicidal patients represent more than half a million annual admissions to emergency departments in the U.S (Ting et al., 2012). In the absence of specific treatment for acute suicidal ideation, these patients are often hospitalized for brief stabilization and later discharged before psychopharmacological treatments can show efficacy.
